Hanging in the Hush

Hold me in perfect stillness in
still air while downstairs
the coffee slips into the pot and the sun
warms the windows
but do not stir
just
yet;

your arms
softer than pillows have just fit
and your head has fallen so
and your smooth legs
on mine
twist
and balance
while downstairs the grapefruit
is cold and ripe and red
in the icebox
and the jam is nearly
gone;

but even the sheets
are settled
as we breathe deeply
half awake
letting the last few stars
fall quietly from our eyes
while down
stairs breakfast,
a patient guest,
waits by the newspaper

this feels exactly like happiness should feel like...

This reads like a lovely relic, a photo on a plate of sensitized iron. Might be my favorite poem so far.

What a perfect rendering of a lazy morning - waking up with the person you love, languidly, and relishing the day!

Wording is ultra impressive from beginning to end -

Love these lines -
"and your smooth legs
on mine
twist
and balance
while downstairs the grapefruit
is cold and ripe and red."

SENSUOUS without being overt.

Joaquin, you are one of my favorite poets. I mean it.

My Friend,
what you've
done here was to
capture
the simplicity of
a Lovely Moment...
and like a
magician, turned
it into something
Epic!

Wow!

*applause & finger snaps!*

One.

I whole heartedly LOVED it.
I remember these lazy mornings with my husband before the birth of our child! Now every morning (because he sleeps in the bed with us) is nose pinching, slaps to the face, and once in a while a nice kissy.
I read it more than once and I don't know what to say that would even do it proper justice. Just a beautifully captured bit of complete earthly pleasure. My favorite part was the personification of breakfast "a patient guest"
Love your site.

It's an alba. Never have I enjoyed breakfast as much as reading this poem. Beautiful.
